If you recently dived into the world of dentures, you might be excited about having a full smile again. You are able to show it off more proudly while also having an easier time eating your favorite foods. That said, as great as they are, you will need to adjust to them first. During this transition period, your speech might change a bit, but what should you expect? Here’s all you need to know and tips to get your clarity back.

Why Do Dentures Make Me Talk Differently?

Before diving into how your speech might change, it’s important to learn why. When you are wearing dentures for the first time, your tongue will need to get used to their placement. It might bump into your prosthetic and lead to you developing a slight lisp. The good news is that you will get adjusted to them over time. Once you do, they should be completely comfortable, but it may take a couple of weeks.

During this transition, you might notice you have a slight lisp. Pronouncing “th,” “f,” “s,” and “v” sounds clearly might be a bit tough. Not only that, but you may notice whistling or a clicking noise, which is typically from you biting down too hard with this restoration.

How Can I Get Used to Talking with Dentures?

Talking differently with dentures can make you feel embarrassed, but try your best not to be! It might be easier said than done, but this is normal to happen. Many people now and in the future are likely to experience this. The good news, though, is that there are ways you can get back to crisp speech. Here are some tips you can try:

  • Read out loud and record yourself. Listening back to yourself can let you pinpoint exactly what you aren’t saying right. This will let you take time to sound them out properly and get used to how it feels with this prosthetic.
  • Count for 60 to 90 to help you get started with practicing more difficult words.
  • Talk to someone you know! Simply having a conversation with someone you trust can give you live feedback about anything that might not have been said right. You might be worried they will make fun of you, so be sure you let them know you’re feeling self-conscious or sensitive; that way, they know not to mess around.

In the end, be patient with yourself. Giving yourself grace while you adjust to having a full smile can help you avoid getting too frustrated. You’re just a short transition away from a confident grin you can’t wait to show off.
